Grades: K-12 (classification based on skill level, not grade)
Beginners: Middle school players will be introduced to the basics of chess including piece movement, tactics (pins, skewers, forks, double, attacks, discovered checks, double checks), and how to checkmate with a combination of various pieces. Players will learn how to maneuver their pieces as a cohesive unit, and they will learn how to score (write down their moves) to review and improve their play.
Intermediate: Chess clocks and tournament play will be introduced at this level. Middle school players will continue their study of piece movement, tactics and how to checkmate with a combination of various pieces. They will review their plays with the instructor to advance to the next level.
Masters Study: Middle school players will be asked to complete chess problems and will study games from the great masters to learn various opening schemes. Emphasis on tournament play will help master players prepare for regional, state and national competitions.
