Grade: 12
This course is an introduction to college-level Organic Chemistry. This course will cover the fundamental principles of organic chemistry, including the structure, bonding, properties and reactivity of organic molecules; and properties and behavior of organic compounds and their derivatives. Emphasis is placed on organic synthesis and mechanisms. The curriculum includes study of covalent and ionic bonding, nomenclature, stereochemistry, structure and reactivity, reaction mechanisms, functional groups and synthesis of simple molecules. Laboratory activities will reinforce fundamental principles of organic chemistry including methods for the purification and identification of organic compounds. This is a one trimester course which counts .333 credit toward Science electives. Students are required to attend 10 of 12 face-to-face sessions. More information will be provided at an information session during the first week of May. Instructors will contact students with an exact date and time.
